UPDATED--Traffic Delays Expected During
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., (April 20, 2011) - To
accommodate for the safety of the athletes and those viewing the
race, several roads in downtown and south St. Petersburg will be
impacted during the St. Anthony's Triathlon on Sunday, May
1, from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Race organizers are advising
the community to expect traffic delays and intermittent road
closures. Most roads will be open, but traffic will be
delayed intermittently and residents are advised to expect
delays.
Some St. Petersburg roads that will be subject to
intermittent closures and delays include:
- 1st Ave. S between 28th St. N. and 1st.
St. N.
- Dr. Martin Luther King St. S. between 18th Ave. S
and Pinellas Point Dr.
- 1st St. S., 2nd St. S., 3rd
St. S., 4th St. S. and 6th St. S between
1st Ave. S. and Pinellas Point Dr.
- Bayshore Dr. will be closed between
5th Ave N. and 5th Ave South.
- North Shore Dr. N.E. and Coffee Pot Blvd. will be
closed between 5th Ave. N. and 22nd
Ave. N.
- Snell Isle Bridge and some Snell Isle neighborhood
streets.
St. Anthony's Triathlon race officials are working closely with
the City of St. Petersburg in planning and St. Petersburg police
officers will be directing traffic during the St. Anthony's
Triathlon.
Host to thousands of athletes and spectators, the St. Anthony's
Triathlon is known for its scenic course along the downtown St.
Petersburg waterfront and for attracting high caliber competition
from around the world. Triathlon registration is closed.
Race organizers understand the annual weekend race may be an
inconvenience to nearby residents and truly appreciate the patience
and understanding of neighbors. The event brings approximately $5
million to the local economy and benefits St. Anthony's Hospital
and its mission to serve the community. For neighbors who would
like to participate in the race as a volunteer, opportunities are
available including athlete check-in, body marking, course marshal

St. Anthony's Triathlon, produced by St. Anthony's Hospital, is
now part of the World Triathlon Corporation's (WTC) new 5150
Triathlon Series. The event will feature 4,000 individual
triathletes and 125 relay teams competing on Sunday, May 1.
Additionally, a world-class professional field will compete for a
prize purse of more than $65,000. The 5150 Series will be the
largest international distance triathlon series in the world and
will be the first non-drafting international race series of its
kind.
The three-day event weekend also includes a two-day sports and
fitness expo held Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30. The Meek
& Mighty Triathlon, a short distance race for youths 7-14 and
novice adults, will be held Saturday, April 30 at North Shore Pool,
901 North Shore Drive, St. Petersburg.
