St. Anthony's Helps Athletes Avoid Upper Extremity Injuries
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
(June 8, 2011) - Sore
shoulders. Sprained wrists. Aching elbows. Such are the aches and
pains with which many athletes are all too familiar. St. Anthony's
sports medicine experts will explain how athletes can keep injuries
of their upper body extremities to a minimum during "Upper
Extremity Sports - How to Avoid Most Common Injuries," a free
sports medicine lecture on Wednesday, June 15, 2011,
at 5:30 p.m. at St. Anthony's Outpatient Center
(Carillon), meeting rooms A and B.
Orthopedic surgeon Douglas Carlan, MD, will discuss the latest
treatments for the most common upper extremity sports. Dr. Carlan
also will explain which conditions respond best to surgical and
non-surgical treatment options. Following the lecture, Melissa
Cunningham, a licensed occupational therapist who specializes in
sports medicine, will demonstrate effective stretches for pre- and
post-sports activities to prevent injuries to the shoulder, elbow,
hand or wrist.
Each month, the St. Anthony's sports medicine experts offer tips
on how to improve sports performance. To register, call
(727) 953-9129 or visit
StAnthonys.com. The outpatient center is located at 900 Carillon
Parkway, off Ulmerton Road, near Feather Sound in St.
Petersburg.
